Hugh “Chip” Cox spent his career designing and managing real-world systems, with a focus on how they behave under pressure and how small decisions can lead to unexpected outcomes.
That work now shows up in two directions. His non-fiction, including Engineering the Smart Home, draws directly from practical experience in system design, automation, and risk management. His fiction explores what happens when those same “what if” questions are taken further—beyond intended limits and into entirely new worlds.
Across both, the focus remains the same: understanding how systems behave when pushed, stressed, or used in ways no one originally planned for.
Now retired, Chip has the time to follow those “what if” questions wherever they lead.
He lives in the southern United States with his wife, family, and four dogs—two labs, a pit bull, and a husky.
